The bag comes around on the carousel looking fine. It's only once you're home, unpacking, that you notice the zip's been forced or something's just not there. By then you're jet-lagged, the airline's claim window is ticking, and you're trying to remember exactly what was in the side pocket.
Why luggage claims are harder than they should be
Airlines and travel insurers both want specifics for a damaged or missing luggage claim — what was in the bag, roughly what it was worth, and ideally some proof you actually owned it. Most travellers pack in a hurry and couldn't list the contents of a checked bag from memory a week later, let alone prove it.
It's worse for anyone who travels a lot — the bags start to blur together, and higher-value items like electronics or jewellery packed "just this once" are the ones that get forgotten when it matters.
What actually helps a claim along
- A quick photo of what's going into a checked bag before you fly, especially anything valuable
- Serial numbers for electronics you're travelling with
- Receipts or a rough value for anything expensive you pack regularly
- A record that isn't inside the bag itself
Where My Asset Mate comes in

It's a Premium category, and every account gets a free one-month Premium trial, handy if you've got a trip coming up.
If a bag comes back damaged or lighter than it left, you've got something better than a guess to hand the airline.
Two minutes at the airport beats an argument with an airline three weeks later.
